Always Distracting Shot or some interrupt, Recurve Bow helps with interrupts, Read the Wind default preparation.
So, we say always an interrupt. Why doesn't ANet understand this? Poor Aidan in EoTN has no interrupt! They ought to replace Debilitating Shot on him with an interrupt.
Another useful tool is a trap if the build is for solo with heroes and hench. Trap either on you or on a hero ranger with manual control. I can't prove it, but over a long period of play it seems to me that mobs keep their distance a bit better on the long term average if you have a trap down.
Now, brethren and sistren, what of Spirits? Muddy Terrain helps until the beasties destroy it. What other Spirits can you recommend?

Disagree. There are other preperations you can use and you can hit 3/4's and 1 second casts without it with good positioning, and that is easier to maintain in PvE. You should use a preperation other than this.

[[Distracting Shot] is great, but in PvE Hard Mode, you really need something else to make it worthwhile, unless you can hit 1/2 second casts with regularity. The AI may be able to do that, but I pretty much need to be camping their face with a recurve to twitch that fast. And yes, I understand pattern-based prediction.
Which is why I run [[Broad Head Arrow], or have a hero or someone else on my team to apply daze. It may be worth a note that activation time is cut in half for hard mode, so you want to take away that advantage.

I enjoy Marksmans Wager builds myself, works very well in areas that don't block your attacks. I have created several powerful builds based on this elite skill. As for interrupts, I find Savage Shot better than distracting shot because of its quicker recharge time.

Distracting Shot also disables, and my PvE bar always has enough room for both Savage and D-Shot unless there's something terribly wrong.

Good post OP - How to post a proper "Rate my Build" thread. As said before - it should be elaborated on a bit, made for all professions and stickied.
About Rangers and interrupts: I played my first and only Ranger for a few months and gave up on him. My favorite characters were Necromancers and Warriors - So I, in error, tried to use the same mindset with my Ranger "I gotta kill stuff!!" So after about a year Not playing my Ranger I tried this touted "D Shot, Savage Shot combo" on my bar that so many Rangers talk about on GWG. Low and behold! I finally got it! I can still be (more than) useful in a team without concentrating on damage. After developing my interrupt skills (this can only accomplished by playing, playing and more playing) and playing with different teams & Missions/Quests for a while - I figure I am stopping just about as much damage to my team as the Monk is healing.
There are so many "High DPS" and such threads in the Ranger Campfire Forum. Sure, it's always good to experiment with different skills, but discounting a total revamp of the Mesmer interrupt skills, Rangers are and will always be the kings of interrupt/shutdown. Thank you OP for making this point clear.

Good thing about Savage Shot is the 5-sec recharge, one of the fastest recharging interrupts (excluding War's adren-based interrupts).
Also, where do I look to find the BBcode for builds that show the images and the description upon mouse-hovering? If possible, please post it here?

[ skill name ] It's like that with no spaces. If the skill is two words then use spaces. [earth shaker]/ [earthshaker]

You should use both [[distracting shot] and [[savage shot] in your builds.
And I prefer [[distracting shot] because it disables for 20 seconds, there's no use in interrupting if the skill is going to be used right after an interrupt. They will just keep casting the skill.

touch rangers don't exactly breeze you through pve. they're not just mindlessly easy to play, they're pretty bad.

But if you do have a build with only room for one, I agree that Savage is the better choice, but only in PvE where the disabling effect of Distracting can be made less effective (half recharge times, unaffected Monster skills). In PvP though, Distracting Shot is invaluable, and I agree you absolutely should use both.
I run one build in particular (PvE) that is based on high DPS skills and BHA for interrupts, and it makes much better use of the faster recharging Savage Shot as opposed to Distracting Shot.

Afaik disable time cannot be reduced by skills such as [[mantra of recovery], so [[distracting shot] should also disable for additional 20 seconds in Hard Mode, correct?

Its disabled, meaning nothing can make it recharge faster. Unless you have something that instantly recharges a skill.
I think.. :/

I think bosses re-enable their distracted skills twice as fast.

I don't think that is true Amy, however I do know that "Monster skills" are not affected by disable skills.
